Christiana Adeyemi
I really think that the MHA team did a fantastic job of crafting this class as the diverse experiences and knowledge held by my classmates has been so educational. Everyone brings such unique insights to class discussions… It’s a great learning environment.
I am a Neuroscience graduate and during my time in undergrad I worked as a research fellow, was involved in Army ROTC, student council, and Bumble’s (social app) ambassador program. I also spent time as an Emergency Department & Inpatient Unit volunteer where I would connect patients to hospital services and coordinate calls and patient requests.
I’m from Fayetteville, NC, but have spent the past four years in New York City. In my free time, I like going on walks and runs, baking, traveling, and trying new coffee shops!
What drew you to pursue an MHA degree?
I have known for a while that I want to pursue a career in medicine, but over the past four years, my journey to becoming a physician has been shaped by a newfound appreciation for the relationship between medicine and public health. I graduated with essentially a minor in public health, and the courses that I took taught me much more about how policy and other external factors can affect the health of entire populations.
Why Dartmouth?
When I was searching for a program to pursue prior to medical school, I knew that I wanted to focus on something health related. I ended up applying and gaining admission to a Master of Science at my alma mater as well as Dartmouth’s MHA. I decided to choose Dartmouth for several reasons. Logistically, I appreciated how flexible this MHA was. Being able to learn from anywhere and opt for an accelerated timeline was very valuable to me. Additionally, I thought the content of the MHA would be much more useful for me, given that I am interested in taking on an administrative role in health care at some point during my career.
Lastly, I really liked how warm and welcoming the MHA team was in all our communications throughout the application process. Their interest in my professional development, genuine desire to see me achieve my goals, and even simple things like pronouncing my name correctly and asking about my life went a long way in my decision process.
What has been the best part of the program for you – so far?
My favorite part of any experience is usually the chance to meet incredible people, and this has been no exception. I really think that the MHA team did a fantastic job of crafting this class as the diverse experiences and knowledge held by my classmates has been so educational. Everyone brings such unique insights to class discussions. For instance, one of my peers is also in law school, and in our Health Economics class, she often brings up points that spur productive and meaningful discussion. It’s a great learning environment.
What are your career goals post-MHA?
I am looking forward to pursuing my lifelong aspiration of a career in medicine, and I hope to begin medical school following MHA graduation. Long-term, my goal is to leverage the experience and knowledge I gain from the MHA program to contribute to meaningful policy changes in both Army and civilian healthcare.
